Service Projects

Captain Jacob Van Meter participates in service projects that promote the goals of the National Society of historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

 

 

DAR BOOK DONATION

Larue County Reads is a reading program for students who are behind in reading at Larue County Schools.  Community volunteers have a reading buddy and spend an hour each week reading with their buddy student.  Captain Jacob Van Meter collects grade level books such as I Can Read Books or Step Into Reading Level Books.  

The chapter donates books to Hardin County Family Court Kids Room for deserted, neglected and abused children.  These books can be any level.

The chapter also collects adult coloring books and art supplies for Hodgenville Memory Café, Alegro Memory Unit in Elizabethtown, and Sunrise Manor in Hodgenville.   

 

 

PROJECT PATRIOT DONATION – HELPING THOSE WHO SERVE AND PROTECT

Our chapter will be collecting donations for wounded and recovering servicemen in Landstuhl, Gernmany and Warrior and Family Support Center at San Antonio Military Medical Center in Texas.  The following list has been requested:

  • Unisex sweatshirts  Small/ Medium/Large
  • Unisex  sweatpants  Medium/Large
  • Men’s Boxer shorts Medium
  • Candy (fun size)
  • Healthy snacks (snack bars with  hemp seeds are not allowed)
  • Basketball Shorts 
  • Duffle Bags
  • Hoodies

Note: All Items Must Be New

 

FOR THE LADIES (female-specific):
• Fuzzy Socks (like spa socks, to wear in rooms)
• Pajama Sets (shirt/flannel sets) <– women don’t like sleeping in gym clothes
• Chick Flick DVDs
• Nail Polish (in pretty colors for toes – must be non-flamable or press on!)
• Good Quality Lotion/Moisturizer
• Air Fresheners (not plug-in types, non-burning)
• Medium White T-shirts

 

 

Hindman Settlement School, Hindman, KY 

The chapter collects used printed ink cartridges and Box Tops for Education for Hindman School as well as monetary donations.  Hindman School has after school and summer programs to assist students with dyslexia.

  

 

Indian Youth of America Summer Camp and Bacone College

The chapter donates to summer camp and scholarships for Native American youth.

 

 

Hardin County One-Room Schoolhouse Summit #1 Preservation

Elizabethtown-Hardin-Larue Retired Teachers own and maintain the one-room schoolhouse, Summit #1, now located at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown.  Our chapter member Julia Richardson was the last teacher at Summit #1 in 1951.  Our chapter donates to the retired teachers’ schoolhouse fund to support the restoration and maintenance of the school.
